Austin is a consultant medical oncologist at The Mater Hospital and associate Professor of Translational Oncology at UCD. In 2023 he became Director of Research for START Dublin, a tripartite partnership between The Mater, UCD and The START Center for Cancer Research to establish Ireland’s first dedicated site for phase 1 clinical trials in oncology. Between 2008 and 2017 he worked at the National Cancer Institute, USA where he developed and led over 25 early-phase clinical trials including the first-in-human combination of immune checkpoint inhibition with loco-regional treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. In 2016 Austin was awarded a National Cancer Institute Director’s Award for Innovation in cancer research before returning to Ireland as a medical oncologist at the Mater Hospital. In October 2021 the National University of Ireland conferred the higher doctorate degree, Doctor of Medicine (DMed), on Professor Duffy in recognition of his internationally recognised research.
