Gerard was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2005 at 42 years of age. Following his treatment and recovery he became a Peer Support Volunteer with the Irish Cancer Society in 2010 offering support and counsel to other patients and survivors. He also helps the Society by telling his story at patient conferences and to medical students at UCC as well as through newspaper articles and media interviews. Gerard is a member of the Society’s PPI panel and reviews many of the applications for funding that the Society receives. He is currently a PPI representative on the Steering Committee of the LIAM Mc Trial which is run by researchers in UCC and healthcare professionals in CUH and aims to meet the health and well-being needs of men with metastatic cancer on a holistic basis beyond their standard treatment
