Dr. Margaret Barton-Burke

Director of Nursing Research, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York

Margaret is a leader and scholar in the field of oncology nursing with a strong commitment to and track record of academic contributions. From 2014 to 2016, she was President of the Oncology Nursing Society and was honored to be appointed Professor of Nursing at several institutions, including Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia; the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, MA; Hunter College in New York, NY; and the University of Missouri–St. Louis (Emeritus). She also serves as a Research Professor at Rutgers Camden University, NJ.

Margaret is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the New York Academy of Medicine. In 2020, she was awarded the Nurses with Global Impact award; in 2021 the Nursing Luminary award from the University of Rhode Island School of Nursing; in 2024 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oncology Nursing Society; and in 2025 received the Eastern Nursing Research Society’s Distinguished Contributions to Nursing Research Award.

In 2015, she became Director of Nursing Research at MSK, one of the world’s premier cancer centers. Her main role is to support and mentor MSK’s 5,000+ nursing professionals to pursue and publish scholarly work and to continue her own programme of research, scholarship, and publication. Margaret leads the Nursing Research Fellowship for staff nurses and nurse practitioners that expanded to include MSK regional affiliates and three additional hospitals.  She fosters, nurtures band participates in interprofessional and interdisciplinary research collaborations that have led to multiple funded grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
